2. Plastic Bottle Bird Feeder

How to Build a Plastic Bottle Bird Feeder:
-
Gather Your Materials:
- A clean and dried plastic bottle with a cap
- String or twine
- Two sticks, dow rods, or pencils
- Bird seed
-
Prepare the Bottle:
Use a drawing pin to make two small holes on opposite sides near the bottom of the plastic bottle.
-
Enlarge the Holes:
Use a pair of scissors to widen the holes to a width slightly smaller than the sticks you will be using. This ensures that the sticks fit snugly through the holes.
-
Insert the Perches:
Push one stick through both holes to create the first perch for the birds. Repeat this process higher up the bottle, angling the second set of holes at a 90-degree angle to the first. This will form a cross shape when viewed from below.
-
Create Drainage Holes:
Use the drawing pin and scissors to make drainage holes about 4 cm above each perch. These holes allow excess bird seed to spill out, preventing overflow and ensuring a steady trickle of food.
-
Prepare the Feeding Holes:
Near the neck of the bottle, make two more opposite holes using the drawing pin and scissors. These will be the feeding holes through which birds can access the seed. Ensure the holes are 7 to 8 mm wide, adjusting based on the size of your bird seed.
-
Attach the Hanging String:
Using the string or twine, thread it through the two holes near the neck of the bottle. Tie the ends securely to create a loop for hanging the feeder.
-
Fill and Assemble:
Pour bird seed into the bottle, ensuring that the feeding holes are adequately sized to allow birds to access the food without the seed spilling out excessively. Screw the lid back onto the bottle to keep the seed dry and secure.
-
Mount the Feeder:
Hang the Plastic Bottle Bird Feeder on a tree branch or a suitable mounting point such as a washing line. Ensure it's placed in a location visible to birds and protected from harsh weather.
-
Enjoy Watching Birds:
Wait for the birds to discover your new feeder. It might take a day or two for them to get used to it, but soon you'll be delighted by their visits.
