Apple Fries With Caramel Cream Dip

These Apple Fries with Caramel Cream Dip are a delightful twist on traditional apple desserts. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, these fried apple slices are coated in cinnamon sugar and served with a creamy caramel dip. They're perfect for parties, dessert, or a special treat anytime.

Ingredients

For the Apples:
  • 4 to 5 tart apples (Granny Smith or Pink Lady)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup Wondra flour (or substitute with cornstarch or all-purpose flour)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ⅛ cup cinnamon
For the Dip:
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 8 ounces Cool Whip (or 1 cup whipped cream sweetened with ½ cup sugar)
  • 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large frying pan to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the buttermilk and 1 cup of sugar. Peel and slice the apples into fry-like strips, adding them to the buttermilk mixture as you go to prevent browning.
  3. Spread the Wondra flour (or cornstarch/all-purpose flour) evenly on a shallow dish.
  4. Remove the apple slices from the buttermilk mixture one at a time, allowing excess liquid to drip off. Lightly coat each slice in the flour, shaking off any excess.
  5. Carefully place the coated apple slices into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until golden brown on one side, then flip to brown the other side.
  6. Once fried, remove the apple slices with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined tray to drain excess oil.
  7. In a small bowl, mix together ½ cup sugar and ⅛ cup cinnamon. While the apple fries are still warm, sprinkle or toss them with the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat evenly.
  8. For the Dip: In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and Cool Whip (or sweetened whipped cream) until smooth. Stir in the caramel sauce until well blended. Transfer to a serving bowl and drizzle additional caramel sauce on top if desired.
  9. Serve the warm apple fries alongside the caramel cream dip. Enjoy immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Flour Options: If you don't have Wondra flour, you can use cornstarch or all-purpose flour as a substitute.
  • Apple Selection: Tart apples like Granny Smith work best to balance the sweetness of the cinnamon-sugar coating and caramel dip.
  • Spice Variations: Feel free to add a pinch of nutmeg, ginger, or apple pie spice to the cinnamon-sugar mixture for extra flavor.
  • Slicing Tips: Cut the apples into thin slices or sticks for faster cooking and a fry-like appearance.
